DJI OM 4: A Month with the Best Smartphone Gimbal
DJI OM 4 is the 4th generation of their mobile phone gimbal. On paper, it is an excellent product and has a small upgrade of magnetic plate clamp that could be a revolutionary addition that every smartphone gimbal needed. OM 4 has many features that make it a powerful tool for social media content creators and video makers who like to shoot videos on their mobile phones.
The DJI OM 4 is better than ever and feels like the best smartphone gimbal of 2022.
In a hurry, read this short overview stating the pros and cons of DJI OM 4.
- Ergonomic design and easy-to-use controls
- Exceptional and game-changing magnetic clamp
- Wide range of supported phones
- Lasting battery life
- Handy tripod accessory
- Best-in-class app
- Plastic construction
- No 4K 60FPS option in the app
- No hard case option
DJI OM 4 is a 149$ gimbal; it comes in only one package. The price is high, but the functionality, stabilization, portability, and unique features have something special.
The gimbal has a lot of competitors, like the models from Zhiyun, iSteady, and Feiyu Tech. And as for comparison, OM 4 costs 10$ more than the Osmo Mobile 3 combo and about 80$ more than similar models of Moza and Feiyu Tech.
Unboxing a DJI device is always exciting. It comes in an excellent package that has significant strengths mentioned, like the foldable portable and information about the unique magnetic plate.
Inside the box, we have an envelope with a soft pouch, magnetic ring holder, and magnetic clamp. Lifting it will reveal the DJI OM 4 and the tripod stand (part of the combo). The charging cable is placed underneath the tripod stand. Moreover, it also has a leaflet to help you properly install the ring holder.
Appearance and Build Quality
DJI OM 4 is a three-axis gimbal with a pistol-grip style design. It has a beautiful and functional design with easily accessible buttons and controls. The gimbal is quite similar to the Osmo 3 but slightly slimmer and heavier. To reduce the size, DJI uses a magnetic holder that attaches to the mobile. Moreover, to handle heavier phones gimbal has a powerful motor that can handle up to 300g.
The buttons and joystick placement are very ergonomic and friendly. On the front, we have the thumb joystick for panning and tilting, a multipurpose button, and the capture button with a battery level indicator. The zoom slider is on the left, and the trigger is behind the handle. That can be used to switch modes and cameras. It also has both USB-C and USB-A ports for charging.
The OM 4 is almost entirely made of plastic; although it feels premium and robust but, the build quality is not the greatest. Sharing this from personal experience, you will see some parts dislocate if you drop it on the ground, but nothing really breaks or crack, and it works perfectly fine.

Features and Performance
DJI OM 4 is undoubtedly the best smartphone gimbal of 2020; it has some of the best features, excellent quality, and an exceptional magnetic clamp design.
The spring-loaded clamp attaches to the mobile phone, and the magnetic connector attaches to the gimbal. It has a metal construction with soft foam padding to prevent any scratches. They are super strong and ensure that mobile never accidentally falls while shooting. Moreover, it makes it extremely portable and easy to use.
The clamp can be difficult to install on phones with centered buttons. Other than that, it will hold smartphones firmly and safely.
DJI OM 4 has one of the best image stabilizations; it can operate in a few modes that can be switched with the buttons or from the app. It also has an all-lock mode. In short, DJI OM 4 covers all the possible usable gimbal operation modes like the pan follow, pan, tilt follow, and POV. In addition to these DJI MIMO app has tons of unique features and shooting modes that make shooting even greater.
Moreover, the tripod stand is a brilliant addition. It is a basic but brilliant product for vloggers and social media content creators who like shooting hyper-lapses and time-lapses. The tripod is connected through a standard quarter inch, so you can attach other accessories or a bigger tripod for better performance.
DJI OM 4 has a big 2450mAh battery that can last around 15 hours, giving you enough time to capture every moment. And it only takes a little over two hours to charge.
DJI MIMO Smartphone App
The DJI MIMO is the app used for every DJI device. It is an excellent, fluid, smooth, and intuitive smartphone app. OM 4 is much more app-dependent than any other smartphone gimbal. You can use it with the primary camera app, but you will still need to go through the activation process and calibration.
The app has some of the best features, like “Story Mode,” in which you can shoot fantastic footage from the preset templates—saving you hours of editing. It also has Active Track 3, which works flawlessly in 9 out of 10 attempts. Another cool mode is called “Dynamic Zoom.” It creates dynamic zoom using a background perspective. The effect is often seen in movies and TV shows. Moreover, it has other unique features like Clone Me Panorama, gesture control, and much more.

The app has a few glitches, and the biggest issue is the absence of the 4K 60FPS option. But I hope we will get that in the next update.
- Gimbal does not come with a hard case.
- Plastic body.
- App does not have a 4K 60FPS option.
- Slightly expensive
- No waterproof rating.
This is how the DJI OM 4 looks in real life. I have captured some unforgettable moments, and it is hard to summarize the effectiveness of the magnetic clamp in words. I think it’s a feature that every gimbal brand will adapt. Moreover, the OM 4 has continued the DJI legacy of setting standards.
