Unboxing

BOYALINK-Closeup

Boyalink is the first (and hopefully not last!) model of this kind offered by Boya. I know the brand very well, because I’ve been using a Boya-made lavalier microphone for a long time (BY-M1 Pro), and also have one of their shotgun mics (BM6060L).
The device arrives in a compact packaging, with plenty of information. There are a few accessories included, out of which I loved the quality of the carrying pouch – it is among the best ways to keep the device in mint condition. Inside this case (it has in-built battery and is used for recharging too) you will find two portable microphones (transmitters) and the receiver. There also is a windshield included, which is highly recommended for recording audio in open spaces, especially if it is windy.

Design and Build Quality:

The Boya Boyalink system consists of a transmitter and a receiver, both of which are compact and lightweight, designed with simplicity and convenience in mind. Both transmitters are identical and have a basic LED to indicate the current status as well as a side button to adjust the mic gain (in 6 levels). Each transmitter features sturdy belt clip and has of course a built-in microphone. There also is a USB-C charging port, which can be utilized while you use the transmitter, and this won’t disrupt the audio quality.
The receiver on the other hand also features a clear and intuitive status LED indicator, providing real-time information about the connectivity, pairing or battery status. It lets you easily slide the corresponding USB Type-C or Lightning adapter onto it, so that you can establish connection to your smartphone, or you may rely on the 3.5mm audio jack which is installed by default.
Both the transmitters and receiver are encased in a durable plastic body that can withstand the rigors of regular use and hosts a battery for seamless and quick recharging.

The BOYALINK transmitter has a convenient belt clip which can also attach it to a shirt or jacket.

Setup & Connectivity

Setting up the Boyalink system is a breeze, thanks to its plug-and-play design. The transmitter and receiver are pre-paired, eliminating the need for manual pairing or complex configuration. Simply connect the receiver to the desired device (a smartphone, a recorder, tablet or similar) and you can start enjoying the significantly better audio experience.

The Boyalink system operates on the 2.4GHz frequency band, ensuring a stable and interference-free connection. With a line-of-sight range of up to 100 meters, users can confidently move around the recording environment without worrying about audio dropouts or signal degradation. In my case – I was able to reach up to 50 meters without any issues in urban environment with a lot of other wireless networks. Indoors it will penetrate through 1 or 2 walls without any issues.
Boyalink doesn’t support a smartphone app yet, meaning that you won’t be able to control the connectivity status or the features via your smartphone.

Audio Performance

When it comes to audio performance, the Boya Boyalink truly shines. The system supports both mono and stereo audio transmission, providing flexibility for various recording setups. The audio quality is impressive, delivering clear and crisp sound with minimal latency. The system has a frequency response range of 20Hz to 20kHz, capturing a wide spectrum of audio frequencies.
Note that if you are looking for professional-grade features such as audio levels in real time, or EQ presets, you may be disappointed: Boyalink is designed to be simple and won’t deliver anything beyond the basics. Since the setup is designed to be used with portable recorders, you won’t really miss such functions in most cases: if the audio is recorded via a smartphone, you will have good visibility of the audio levels if your recording software supports such a feature.

Battery Life

The Boyalink system is powered by built-in rechargeable lithium batteries in both the transmitter and receiver. With a battery life of up to 6 hours (during my testing!), you can confidently rely on the system for long recording sessions without interruption. The devices can be conveniently charged using the provided USB-C cables, making it easy to recharge them using a power bank or any USB power source.

User Experience

The LCD screen provides essential information at a glance, ensuring a hassle-free recording experience.

The system is compatible with a wide range of devices, including cameras, smartphones, tablets, and audio recorders. The versatile connectivity options make it suitable for different recording scenarios, such as filmmaking, vlogging, live streaming, interviews, and more.
