Living outside the USA and wondering how people can fly at distances up to 2km with their DJI Spark?
We have a solution for you!
This is an easy tutorial for switching to FCC mode while you are outside USA. Works flawlessly in Europe. Please do NOT abuse and make sure to comply with local laws and regulations.
IMPORTANT: The latest DJI SPark firmware works fine with this mod. What doesn’t work fine with it are the latest DJI go 4 app versions.
4.1.16 and newer are reverting to CE mode automatically (without asking or notifying you). 4.1.8 works fine though. You may download it here:
If you are keen on using the latest version, try to compile a modded app yourself.
Here’s some background:
DJI Spark range settings (taken from the DJI website):
2.412 – 2.462 GHz (unobstructed, free of interference)
FCC: 1.2 mi (2 km); CE: 0.3 mi (500 m)
SRRC: 0.3 mi (500 m); MIC: 0.3 mi (500 m)
5.745 – 5.825 GHz (unobstructed, free of interference)
FCC: 1.2 mi (2 km); CE: 0.18 mi (300 m)
SRRC: 0.7 mi (1.2 km); MIC: –
DJI Spark uses communication between drone and transmitter, allowing the transmitter to pass FPV footage to a smartphone or tablet, just like the other popular DJI models – Mavic and Phantom. Unlike Phantom, which uses technology called Lightbridge (modified wif icommunication allowing the drone to send data over large distances), or the DJI Mavic which implies a similar technology called “Occusync” the DJI Spark uses “boosted WiFi” which limits the range of transmission.
While in the USA most people can reach up to 2 km (FCC regulations are currently allowing the transmitter to operate at higher gain), in the EU region it may be struggling to get 500 meters.
You may try the modified DJI Go app, which has not been created by me and I cannot confirm whether it contains spyware or not. Use with caution! And do not enter your real account information!!!!
We’ve only used it to switch the DJI transmitter to FCC mode and uninstalled it.
1. Install the modded app. Do NOT enter your original credentials as I don’t trust the app. Put random name and it will log you in.
2. Once the drone and transmitter are turned on and connected, go to settings, go to your transmitters serial number, tap on it and enter US as region. Confirm that via the app. The transmitter may restart.
3. Uninstall the modded app.
4. Install the original DJI Go 4 app (preferably version 4.1.8). After that every time you start the DJI Go 4 original app it will ask you whether correct the region of the WiFi settings and you always need to choose “cancel”.
